Lusaka:Zambian authorities have approved the transfer of five Angolan prisoners, out of 11 currently serving sentences in Zambia, to complete their remaining terms in Angola. This decision was confirmed by a press release issued by the Angolan Embassy in Lusaka.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the announcement came during a meeting between Angolan Ambassador to Zambia Albino Malungo and a multi-sectoral technical delegation that had arrived in Lusaka. The delegation is working to address the legal status of Angolan nationals detained in Zambia.
The remaining six Angolan prisoners are awaiting official authorization from Zambian authorities for their transfer. The convicts, aged between 20 and 59, are serving sentences ranging from two and a half years to 16 years for various offenses, including theft, bodily harm, residential burglary, illegal stay, unlawful entry, illegal hunting, possession of hunting trophies, and aggravated robbery.
Currently, six of these prisoners are held in correctional facilities in Zambia's Western Province, while the other five are in Lusaka. Before meeting with Ambassador Malungo, the Angolan delegation engaged with Zambia Correctional Service representatives, led by Deputy Commissioner-General Bwalya Kuyomba, who emphasized the importance of these discussions in enhancing bilateral cooperation and streamlining prisoner transfer processes.
Led by Deputy Commissioner for Criminal Investigation Edson Albano Alberto C©sar, the delegation is conducting an audit of records, assessing detention conditions, and verifying details of Angolan nationals imprisoned in Zambia. The team, which includes experts from various Angolan government ministries, will complete its mission on September 30.
