Zaire: At least 13 people died and 11 were seriously injured in a truck rollover in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the municipality of Tomboco in northern Zaire province. The tragic incident has raised concerns about road safety in the region.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Manuel Mpanzo Cassua, spokesperson of the Civil Protection and Fire Service in Zaire, stated that the accident occurred around 4 a.m. on National Road 210. The section of the road lies between the municipalities of Mbanza Kongo and Tomboco. The truck, which was transporting various goods, was en route from Mbanza Kongo to Luanda, the capital of Angola, carrying over 20 passengers. Unfortunately, 12 individuals, including a 16-month-old child, died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at the Tomboco Municipal Hospital.
Cassua indicated that the accident was likely caused by brake failure. He noted that search and rescue operations for bodies from the accident are ongoing at the site.
Jos© Maciala, a doctor on duty at the Tomboco Municipal Hospital, reported that out of the 11 injured individuals admitted to the hospital, six with femur fractures have been transferred to the Zaire Provincial Hospital in Mbanza Kongo.
