Sixty Homes Flooded in Samba Due to Heavy Rainfall

Luanda: Approximately 60 homes in several neighborhoods in the municipality of Samba were flooded as a result of heavy rainfall on Saturday, according to local administrator Loide Faria. The information was shared during a press briefing following an assessment visit to the most affected areas, with the aim of enhancing the institutional response to critical flooding incidents.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the flooding has been exacerbated by the construction of houses in areas with high water tables and natural water courses, which complicates drainage and intensifies the impact of rainfall. Loide Faria emphasized the urgent need to relocate over 400 families from the Kawelele neighborhood in Futungo, as they are currently residing in houses built in a retention lagoon, which is a natural water collection point.

Faria expressed concern over the continued presence of families in this high-risk area and highlighted the administration’s intentions to register affected families and explore viable solutions. ‘The fact that families remain in that area of the natural retention basin is worrying. We are going to register families and work to find solutions, as we cannot continue to face the same problems every year,’ she stated.

Meanwhile, Karina Sabino, coordinator of the Kawelele Neighborhood Residents’ Commission, noted that the flooding situation has been a recurring issue for more than 30 years. Efforts are underway by the administration’s technical team to mitigate the impact, including cleaning drainage ditches and using motor pumps and other heavy machinery to remove accumulated water.
