Travel Rebound: 2 Million People Go Through US Airports

DALLAS – The airline industry’s recovery from the pandemic passed a milestone as more than 2 million people streamed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on Friday for the first time since early March 2020.

The Transportation Security Administration announced Saturday that 2.03 million travelers were screened at airport checkpoints on Friday. It was the first time in 15 months that the number of security screenings had surpassed 2 million in a single day.

Airline bookings have been picking up since around February, as more Americans were vaccinated against COVID-19 and – at least within the United States – travel restrictions such as mandatory quarantines began to ease.

The recovery is not complete. Friday’s crowds were only 74% of the volume compared with the same day in 2019. However, the 2.03 million figure was 1.5 million more travelers than on the same day last year, according to the TSA.

The 2 million mark represents quite a turnaround for the travel industry, which was hammered by the pandemic. There were days in April 2020 when fewer than 100,000 people boarded planes in the U.S., and the CEO of Boeing predicted that at least one major U.S. airline would go bankrupt.

Most of the airlines are still losing money. Southwest eked out a narrow first-quarter profit thanks to its share of $64 billion in federal pandemic relief to the industry, and others are expected to follow suit later this year.

The fear of large-scale furloughs has lifted. United Airlines, which lost $7 billion and threatened to furlough 13,000 workers last fall, told employees this week that their jobs were secure even when the federal money runs out in October.

That’s because airlines like United are upbeat about salvaging the peak summer vacation season. International travel and business trips are still deeply depressed, but domestic leisure travel is roughly back to pre-pandemic levels, airline officials say.

The airlines are recalling employees from voluntary leave and planning to hire small numbers of pilots and other workers later this year.

Hotel operators say they, too, have seen bookings improve as vaccination rates rise.

Mike Gathright, a senior vice president at Hilton, said the company’s hotels were 93% full over the Memorial Day weekend. He said the company was “very optimistic” about leisure travel over the summer and a pickup in business travel this fall.

“The vaccine distribution, the relaxed travel restrictions, consumer confidence — all of that is driving occupancy and improvement in our business,” Gathright said.

Prior to the pandemic, TSA screened on average 2 million to 2.5 million travelers per day. The lowest screening volume during the pandemic was on April 13, 2020, when just 87,534 individuals were screened at airport security checkpoints.

By the middle of last month, TSA’s average daily volume for screenings was approximately 65% of pre-pandemic levels.

As the summer travel season approaches, TSA is advising passengers to arrive at airports with sufficient time to accommodate increased screening time, as traveler volumes are expected to approach, and in some cases exceed, pre-pandemic levels at certain airports.

CHANGING TIDES: EARTH’S SOUTHERN SEAS NOW OFFICIALLY WORLD’S FIFTH OCEAN

Since National Geographic celebrated World Oceans Day on 8 June 2021, they now recognise the Southern Ocean as the world’s fifth ocean with the other four being the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic oceans.

“The Southern Ocean has long been recognised by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognised it,” says National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait.

Since the late 1970s, the National Geographic Society has employed a geographer who oversees changes and tweaks to every map that’s published. Tait has been on the job since 2016. And so, throughout the years, geographers debated whether the waters around Antarctica had enough unique characteristics to deserve their own name, or whether they were simply extensions of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

“It’s sort of geographic nerdiness in some ways,” Tait says. He and the society’s map policy committee had been considering the change for years, watching as scientists and the press increasingly used the term Southern Ocean.

The change, Tait adds, aligns with the Society’s initiative to conserve the world’s oceans, focusing public awareness onto a region in particular need of a conservation spotlight.

“We’ve always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently [than other oceans],” Tait says. “This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognise it because of its ecological separation.”

Southern Ocean defined by its current

While the other oceans are defined by the continents that fence them in, the Southern Ocean is defined by a current.

Scientists estimate that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) was established roughly 34 million years ago, when Antarctica separated from South America. That allowed for the unimpeded flow of water around the bottom of the Earth.

Extending from the surface to the ocean floor, the ACC transports more water than any other ocean current. It pulls in waters from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, helping drive a global circulation system known as the conveyor belt, which transports heat around the planet.

TWITTER BAN WILL HARM NIGERIA AS A TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT DESTINATION

In recent years Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest city, has become Africa’s most attractive tech hub for investors. But that could be imperilled by the government’s decision to suspend Twitter’s operations in the country.

Although no direct connection has been drawn, the ban came two days after Twitter took down a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari. Twitter claimed the message had been deleted because it violated its rules against “abusive behaviour”. The ban could be in retaliation.

A new chill entered into the relationship between Nigeria and Twitter in mid-April when the social media platform chose Ghana for its regional headquarters. Nigeria’s market is bigger than Ghana’s, with more Twitter users than Ghana has citizens. Ghana won because its government has created an attractive environment for external investors by improving the country’s electricity output, and investing in good roads and a paperless port project.

Nevertheless, Nigeria’s fledgling technology sector had been seen as an attractive proposition to investors because of the pool of talent in Nigeria, increasing smartphone penetration and access to the Nigerian market of 200 million people.

Get news that’s free, independent and based on evidence.

The Nigerian technology scene, concentrated in Lagos, is a recent and rare success story. One particular area of growth has been the financial technology (fintech) sector.

But the ban makes it difficult for the government to argue that it is friendly to technology enterprises. The Nigerian government has often called on foreign investors to invest in Nigerian technology start-ups and support Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

For example, in 2016 Buhari hosted Mark Zuckerberg on the Facebook CEO’s first visit to sub-Saharan Africa. Facebook is set to open an office in the second quarter of 2021 in Lagos.

The indefinite Twitter suspension could prove to be a setback by spooking investors.

Tech start ups

Nigeria’s financial technology (fintech) start-ups have begun to engage innovatively with segments of the population that can’t access traditional financial services. About 56% of Nigerian adults are unbanked.

Homegrown businesses Flutterwave and Paystack are two examples of fintech start-ups that have been able to secure investments recently.

Flutterwave provides payment solutions for businesses. It recently attracted investment of US$170 million from a consortium of foreign investors. Paystack, which also provides payment solutions and customer analytics, attracted US$200 million from US payments giant Stripe.

The two start-ups recently earned the coveted unicorn status. This is a reference to privately held technology start-up businesses valued at more than US$1 billion. This means that Flutterwave and Paystack are already, on paper, more valuable than most of Nigeria’s biggest banks.

The suspension could make it harder for technology entrepreneurs like this to get investment. Technology entrepreneurs will now need to convince investors about regulatory risks. This will be especially so if their business models require an active social media presence.

The Twitter ban will also reduce the exposure of Nigerian technology entrepreneurs to the world, reducing their ability to attract funding and grow their markets.

Finally, it sits at odds with the government’s goal of economic growth and openness by sending a signal that Nigeria is not entirely open for technology business.

ANGOLAN PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES MEDICAL TEAM FOR PERFORMING HIGHLY COMPLEX SURGERIES

Luanda – João Lourenço congratulated, this Saturday, the health professionals of the Josina Machel Hospital, for the successful performance of two highly complex tumor removal surgeries.

On his Twitter account, João Lourenço said that the surgeries to remove tumors, carried out successfully at the Josina Machel Hospital, in Luanda, “deserve our appreciation and recognition of the value of our health staff”.

President Lourenço congratulated the medical teams that performed this feat, which makes Angolans very proud and encouraged the continuation of the investment in the differentiated training of national specialists and in the building and equipping of reference hospitals.

Maxillofacial Surgery

This month, a medical team from the Maxillofacial Service of Josina Machel Hospital successfully performed two complex surgeries that, until now, were only possible abroad.

The intervention involved the removal of two tumors, one of five and the other of two kilograms, from 26 and 12-year-old patients, the latter being a female.

The patient, Joaquina Manuel, who was admitted to the hospital, had been suffering, for seven years, from benign ameloblastoma.

In turn, a 26-year old man, Pedro, lived for 15 years with the tumor, which grew in the bones of his mouth, so after several tests, surgery was the only solution indicated.

According to the Maxillo-Facial surgeon, Agnelo Lucamba, these patients will be able to gradually return to normal life.

ANGOLA BENEFITS FROM REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT TO STORE VACCINES

Luanda – At least 490 equipment for storing vaccines were delivered, this Saturday, to the Ministry of Health (MINSA), to reduce the need for expansion and rehabilitation of the refrigeration and storage systems health units.

The donation from the China Merchants Foundation includes 150 solar coolers and their respective solar panels, 40 electric ones and 300 isothermal boxes.

According to Health minister, Sílvia Lutucuta, this donation, valued at 1 million dollars, will make it possible to equip and strengthen 190 health units across the country.

Sílvia Lutucuta added that the cooling and refrigeration system is one of the important pillars for any vaccination programme, as it guarantees the supply of safe vaccines.

“This material will make it possible to preserve not only the vaccines against Covid-19, but also those of the children’s vaccination programme and guarantee health through immunization,” said the minister.

She also informed that the 150 coolers with solar panels and the capacity to store three thousand doses of vaccine each one, will allow covering areas of difficult access and without electricity from the public network.

Regarding Covid-19, the minister said that Angola is negotiating with the Chinese government to acquire more vaccines from Sinopharm.

The cabinet official took the opportunity to alert the population that transcripts of vaccines against Covid-19 are not authorized on the International vaccine Card, noting that the World Health Organization (WHO) is organizing and will define the methodology and type of vaccines cards to use.

On his turn, the Chinese ambassador to Angola, Gong Tao, expressed the willingness of his government, Chinese companies and organizations to continue to support Angola’s efforts in the health, economic and commercial sectors and, in particular, in fighting Covid-19.
