Casio to Release Compact G-SHOCK Offering Workout-Oriented Convenience

The First Square-Shaped Watch in the Sports-Driven G-SQUAD Line

TOKYO, June 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today the release of the GBD-200, a new addition to the sports-driven G-SQUAD line in the G-SHOCK family of shock-resistant watches. Inheriting the iconic square-shaped case design of the very first G-SHOCK, these compact new watches offer convenient functionality for workouts as well as everyday use.

GBD-200

The GBD-200 boasts a new, smaller profile design for the case, which is 2.0mm slimmer, 8.8mm shorter, and 3.4mm narrower compared to the predecessor GBD-100. To make the watch look even slimmer, the case, bezel and other parts are carefully designed to appear flat when viewed from the side. The band is made of soft urethane to provide outstanding ventilation and flexibility and ensure a snug fit on the wrist. Holes near the lugs that fasten the band to the case ensure breathability, helping to shed perspiration and give the watch a comfortable, airy fit that is great for exercise. The precision 5mm hole-spacing employed for the band allows for precise length adjustments, as well.

The GBD-200 also boasts outstanding functionality. Just pair with a smartphone via Bluetooth® to adjust distances captured by with the watch’s acceleration sensor using smartphone GPS. When the user adjusts this once, the watch will then measure distances with even higher degrees of accuracy,* even when not connected to a smartphone. The watch also measures running pace and comes with an Auto lap feature that automatically keeps track of times over a set distance. When used with the dedicated G-SHOCK MOVE app, the watch offers great support for daily workouts, allowing users to check life logs with data on step counts and calories burned, activity logs, and more, right on the  smartphone.

*In comparison with distance measurements made by preceding Casio models using the accelerometer alone. Depends on the accuracy of the smartphone’s GPS function as well.

GBD-200-1, GBD-200-2, GBD-200-9

Rita Moreno Discusses Finding Self-Worth and Never Giving Up

NEW YORK – Rita Moreno emigrated with her mother from Puerto Rico at age five. By six, she was dancing at Greenwich Village nightclubs. By 16, she was working full time. By 20, she was performing in “Singin’ in the Rain.”

“I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever met in the business who lived the American dream more than Rita Moreno,” Norman Lear says in the documentary “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It.”

In the decades that followed, Moreno has won a Tony, a Grammy, an Emmy and Oscar, for “West Side Story.” (Her entire acceptance speech: “I don’t believe it.”) With seemingly infinite spiritedness, she has epitomized the best of show business while also being a victim to its cruelties. That has made Moreno, who co-stars in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story” remake, a heroic figure to Latinos, and to others. “I have never given up,” she said in a recent interview by Zoom from her home in Berkeley, California.

The reason for the conversation was Mariem Pérez Riera’s intimate and invigorating documentary, which opens in theaters Friday after playing virtually at the Sundance Film Festival and at an outdoor premiere at the Tribeca Festival. The film opens with Moreno preparing a Cuban themed party for her 87th birthday. “And I demand costumes,” the screen legend says with a smile.

As upbeat as Moreno remains, “Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It” also deals frankly with the many turbulences of Moreno’s life: being positioned as the “Spanish Elizabeth Taylor” and the stereotyped casting that followed; a long and painful relationship with Marlon Brando; the abuse of her agent; a confining marriage.

Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: What struck me most watching the film is that despite going through what would defeat or embitter most, you seem to have emerged with such joy and appreciation for life.

Moreno: I have a very strong constitution. Maybe you inherit it. Maybe it’s due to learning how to cope with my tumultuous life through psychotherapy. I really credit that for helping me through some really, really bad times. My mom was like that, too. And you know what? I have a feeling that a lot of people who are outliers have strong constitutions because it’s either sink or swim, right? And I think you learn early on in life that swimming is preferable to sinking.

AP: How early did you learn that?

Moreno: The first test, I think, was learning English in kindergarten when I didn’t know a word, not a word. That’s the first thing that happened to me literally when I came to this country. Children are impressively resilient. And then, in a way, they’re also extremely tender and fragile. I think the reason I ending up having such a hard time in life is that I ran into a racial bias very early on. When you’re young — I mean 5, 6, 7 — and people call you bad names like “spic” or “garlic mouth” or “gold tooth,” like in “West Side Story,” you’re tender, you’re a child. You believe these things. You believe that you’re not worthy.

AP: Your life seems to be this long process of unlearning the cruel or wrong things you were told about yourself.

Moreno: What a wonderful way to put it. You’re absolutely on the money. I had to learn that I was a person of value like all other people. But it’s very difficult when you learn something from childhood. It’s not as though I came to this country when I was 20 and learned something different. I was a little girl and you’re very impressionable. You believe that you don’t have value. You don’t know why you don’t have it, but you believe it. And, man, that is so hard to get rid of.

AP: Your central therapy session followed years with Marlon Brando. In your memoir, you spoke about him as your greatest lover but your time with him was torturous.

Moreno: Here’s what’s hilarious to me. It was he who said to me: “You need help. You need therapy.” So the lunatic is telling the crazy woman that she needs help! (Laughs). But he was right! He was right. I remember the day he said that to me, I thought: “Yeah, but he’s crazy as a loon!”

AP: After “West Side Story,” you’ve said you were offered only similar, stereotypical roles for years.

Moreno: Those were brutal. Brutal! When I got the Oscar and the Golden Globe, I thought: “OK, finally.” And that’s not what happened at all. In fact, it was the opposite. I was offered more Anita-type roles when I was offered something, which was not that frequent. I made a decision not to accept any more of those kinds of roles. It was a lot of coffee pourers, housewives and stuff. I said I’m not going to do them anymore. Ha-ha, I showed them. I didn’t make a movie for seven years. I mean, how stubborn can you get?

AP: You recently revisited “West Side Story” with Spielberg. How was that?

Moreno: It was just grand. I’ve been a fan of Steven’s work for years. When he called, he offered me a part in “West Side Story.” I nearly peed my pants because this is Steven Spielberg, one of my idols. I said to him that I would love to do a cameo, but I said, “You don’t really want me to do that, do you?” And he said, “Oh, no, no. It’s a part. It’s a real part. Tony Kushner wrote it for you.” First of all, Tony Kushner’s writing the script? What! I was thrilled. I was excited the way a child would be excited.

AP: I don’t imagine you do, but do you have any regrets?

Moreno: If I can’t have all the movies I always wanted to be in — which are all the Meryl Streep movies, I wanted to be her — but if I can’t do that, I’ve done pretty well, considering. And I think I’ve left an important legacy in a very, very meaningful sense and that is: That I have never gave up.

G-7 Tax Reform Proposal Draws Fire from Smaller, Developing Countries

Smaller economies and developing nations are rallying behind a rival global tax reform plan to the one struck last week by the wealthy G-7 nations.

Under the agreement, the G-7 nations are backing a global minimum corporate tax of 15%, but smaller nations say the reform would harm their economies, if adopted across the world, and retard their recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

They complain the reform, proposed by U.S. President Joe Biden as part of a bigger package aimed at curbing tax avoidance by large corporations shifting where their profits are taxed, will benefit only rich countries. They argue they should be allowed to offer corporate tax rates lower than the G-7’s earmarked minimum.

But G-7 finance ministers say that will just allow the continuation to a race to the bottom, where countries compete for multinationals’ business by reducing corporate tax rates.

Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar said raising his country’s 12.5% corporate tax rate, would be “damaging to the national interest.” Other leaders of smaller nations say using tax rates to lure foreign investment is crucial for their economic well-being.

Many back a rival plan that the U.N. Tax Committee has been developing which focuses specifically on the digital giants and grants additional taxation rights to countries where the digital services are provided and where the revenue is generated as opposed to where the country is headquartered, enabling developing economies to capture more income, too. India, Argentina, Ecuador, Ghana, Nigeria and Vietnam are among the emerging economies favoring the U.N. plan, arguing it reflects the economic needs of developing nations.

“The G-7 change is, in part, about getting big companies to pay more tax, by closing off loopholes which allow them to shift profits around the world. But behind all the fine words is also a desperate scramble by countries to generate revenue for their own exchequers, in the wake of a massive COVID-19 hit,” complains business commentator Eoin Burke-Kennedy in a commentary for the Irish Times.

The G-7 proposal follows mirrors the lines of a reform the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development — a 38-strong forum of mainly high-income countries — has been advocating for years that would see multinationals pay a greater proportion of tax in those countries where they earn profits and establish of a minimum global tax rate. But that would put a squeeze on smaller entrepreneurial nations, and not just those that are largely viewed as brazen tax havens, say opponents.

G-7 finance ministers hope last week’s summit will add momentum for upcoming tax talks planned with 135 countries in Paris and for a meeting of the Group of 20 countries in Venice next month. Under the G-7 proposal companies would pay the bulk of their taxes in the country where they are headquartered, even when profits, labor and the raw materials used are sourced from developing countries. Much of the proposal focuses on 100 of the world’s leading companies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the G-7 proposal guarantees greater equity. “That global minimum tax would end the race-to-the-bottom in corporate taxation and ensure fairness for the middle class and working people in the U.S. and around the world,” she posted on Twitter.

But that isn’t the view of several smaller European governments, who for years have been fending off efforts by the European Union to establish a corporate tax minimum for member states and whose opposition has not diminished. Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, has ridiculed the tax proposal.

“I consider it absurd that any world organization should assert the right to say what taxes Hungary can levy and what taxes it cannot,” Orban said at a recent press conference. Hungary has a 9% corporate rate, the lowest in the EU, which has helped the country attract foreign investment, say Hungarian officials. They say a global minimum tax rate would likely impact 2,000 to 3,000 major companies in Hungary.

The Polish government has also expressed opposition, largely on grounds of national sovereignty. The country’s corporate tax rate is 19%, well above the proposed minimum, and it has spoken out in recent years against tax havens and digital giants escaping tax.

But Polish finance minister Tadeusz Koscinski told the Financial Times last week that Warsaw does not want the G-7 “dictating what tax rate we have in our country.” The Poles have also suggested domestic companies should have a waiver on a corporate tax minimum. “We don’t support the idea of a minimum tax on the profits companies make in Poland on business in Poland,” he said.

Ireland has been the most forward-leaning in voicing opposition. Irish finance minister Paschal Donohoe has complained smaller nations don’t have the same capacity for scale as the larger economies do.

The African Tax Administration Forum, an advisory group for African governments, says there should be a tiered approach in which minimum thresholds could be set at lower levels for smaller economies. “We don’t think a single threshold for all economies is equitable,” it said in a statement. The strength of the opposition to the G-7 proposal suggests it will be hard to get a sign from the G-20 next month or from a majority of the 135 countries meeting soon in Paris, say finance-sector observers.

ANGOLA CALLS FOR RE-LAUNCH OF PEACE PROCESS IN WESTERN SAHARA

New York – Angola urged on Monday in New York the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation to “actively” support the efforts of the UN secretary-general to relaunch the peace process in Western Sahara.

Western Sahara has been listed by the United Nations as one of the 17 Non-Autonomous Territories in the world for approximately 58 years (as of December 1963).

It was occupied by Spain until 1975, the year in which it transferred administrative control of the territory to Morocco.

The Polisario Front, which fights for the independence of the territory, proclaimed the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) on February 27, 1976, with a government-in-exile, in Algeria.

Speaking during a meeting of the Decolonization Committee, the permanent representative of Angola to the United Nations, ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira, considered it essential to appoint a new UN envoy to Western Sahara, in order to speed up the holding of a referendum for the Saharawi people.

To diplomat, “direct and substantive” negotiations between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco would allow the Saharawi people to freely and democratically exercise their right to self-determination, through a fair and lasting solution, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

“Angola joins all those who promote the initiatives of the United Nations Security Council, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community, which aim to restore the right to self-determination to the Saharawi people”, she declared.

Ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira said that the process should be peacefully handled and in compliance with international law and respect for the borders inherited from the colonial period, as provided for in the Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU).

Meanwhile, the diplomat encouraged the implementation of the Resolution Plan of the UN and the Organisation of the African Union (OAU), now the African Union, accepted by both parties and approved by the Security Council, in 1990 and 1991, to fulfill the Mission’s mandate. of the United Nations for the referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

“The independence, sovereignty and unity of States represent the legitimate rights of all peoples. However, (…) not all territories benefit from the commitments of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, pursuant to Resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly of December 14, 1960”, stressed Maria de Jesus.

Donation of blood saves lives, but only a few Nigerians are voluntary non-remunerated donors

– “I am a regular blood donor. I usually donate blood at least three times a year. However, in 2020, I donated once – in February – due to the pandemic and lockdown. During the lockdown, I received several reminders from the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) Abuja, where I usually donate, but the fear of covid-19 prevented me from donating. However, I plan to resume donating again”, says Adebowale Adedigba, a voluntary non-remunerated blood donor.

Mr Adedigba who is one Nigeria’s few voluntary unpaid donors said his initial visit to a donating site in 2012 was accidental. He was educated on the shortage of blood in Nigeria and its impact on those needing it, since then, he decided to become a regular donor.

“Being young and at the prime of my youth, I know I am helping many people who are needing blood. I am O positive, and my blood can save many people. I also use the opportunity to know my health status as I get regular screening anytime I donate. I urge everyone who is healthy to participate, he said.

Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. Despite the lifesaving properties of blood donation, only a few Nigerians are regular and voluntary blood donors. Blood is needed for surgical procedures, as well as to treat severe anaemia, inherited blood disorders, and other conditions.

The World Health Organization commemorates World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products like plasma. This day is also an opportunity to thank and appreciate voluntary, unpaid blood donors for this life-saving gift.

The day celebrated on 14 June each year also provides an opportunity to call to action to governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources and put into place, systems and infrastructures to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors.

This year’s theme is “Give blood and keep the world-beating” is apt because fewer people – just like Mr Adedigba- have been donating blood during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, NBTS has 17 blood donation centres across six geo-political zones which leads to the collection of over 60 000 units of blood annually. However, in 2020, there was a decline in the rate of donation due to the covid-19 pandemic. The National Blood transfusion services carry out blood donation drives with support of implementing partners.

NBTS and WHO system for blood safety reporting indicated that a total of 158,378 voluntary non remunerated blood donation were screened between January 2018 and May 2021 from federal institutions reporting in the database.

In her message to commemorate 2020 World Blood Donor Day, WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti encouraged more young people to donate blood to save lives and to inspire their peers and families to do so too.

She noted that though bloodstock decreased in the African Region as movement restrictions and fears of infection hindered people from accessing donation sites, some blood donors even during the pandemic made extraordinary efforts to continue to donate blood.

She said this was made possible due to the “awareness campaigns backed by the collaboration of donor associations, civil society organizations, and armed and security forces, have led to good levels of voluntary donor recruitment in Nigeria and seven other African countries (Algeria, Burundi, Chad, Ethiopia, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and Zambia).

In Nigeria, WHO has been providing support to NBTS in the drive for blood donation through blood drives awareness creation and the reporting of blood safety data in the country. The reporting currently covers all the tertiary institutions and it is scheduled to be scaled up to cover all secondary-level facilities including the private sector.

This year’s commemoration, NBTS with the support of WHO will be recognizing the 10 highest donors who have continuously donated the gift of life as a way to encourage Voluntary non-remunerated donation of Blood.
