President Saied receives credentials of new Ambassadors to Tunisia


Tunis: President of the Republic Kais Saied on Friday chaired a ceremony during which he received the credentials of new ambassadors to Tunisia, according to a Presidency of the Republic press release.

The new ambassadors are Qatar’s Ambassador to Tunisia Zayed bin Saeed Rashid Al-Kumait Al-Khayarin, Namibia’s Ambassador to Tunisia with residence in Algiers Panduleni Kaino Shingence, Chile’s Ambassador to Tunisia with residence in Algiers Francisco Javier Berguno Hurtado, Peru’s Ambassador to Tunisia Jorge Eduardo Wurst Kall and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Tunisia with residence in Tripoli Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Khairul Bashar.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mounir Ben Rjiba.

Council of Ministers examines draft law amending provisions of Penal Code


Tunis: A council of ministers, was held, on Friday at the Prime Ministry under chairmanship of Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani. It examined a draft law amending a set of provisions in the Penal Code (Article 96) as well as several other draft decrees.

The PM underlined that “the State is determined to consolidate its social role and eradicate precariousness, particularly among economic actors as well as provide greater support for various age groups.»

The draft law amending certain provisions of the Penal Code (Article 96) was examined as part of the legislative reforms aimed at improving the business climate, protecting public officials and establishing balance between the goals of the penal policy in combating administrative and financial corruption.

Justice Minister, Leila Jaffel, stressed the need to develop a comprehensive legal framework which aims at prosecuting those involved in administrative and financial corruption.

The council of ministers also examined other draft decrees, including:

– A draft
decree supplementing Decree No. 250 of 2001 of May 28, 2001 related to the composition of the National Tax Council.

– A draft decree amending and supplementing Decree No. 545 of 2023 of July 20, 2023 setting the conditions and procedures to benefit from the State’s coverage of the interest rate differential on seasonal loans for grain crops, limited to three points compared to the market interest rate, for loans granted by banks from their resources to small farmers in the grain sector.

The meeting also focused on several draft decrees related to kindergartens and summer camps.

Abdellatif Mekki kept at liberty in Jilani Daboussi case


Tunis: The Investigating Judge at the Tunis Court of First Instance decided, on Friday, to keep former Health Minister and Secretary-General of the “Labour and Achievement” party Abdellatif Mekki at liberty.

The decision was made after hearing him in the case involving the death of businessman Jilani Dabboussi, said the party’s Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Neffati.

Neffati told TAP that the investigative judge took several measures against Abdellatif Mekki including “a travel ban” as well as “a ban from appearing in the media until the next hearing, to be held within a month.”

Tunisia and Brazil willing to boost bilateral cooperation in several fields


Tunisia: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, had a meeting, on Friday, with his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, as part of his working visit to Brazil. Both ministers discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues.

They reiterated the need to consolidate partnership and exchange expertise in all areas of common interest on the basis of mutual respect and interest, reads a statement of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The two ministers underscored that this meeting would strengthen ties and open up new horizons for cooperation, which was felt in the successful organization of the Tunisian-Brazilian Economic Forum on July 11 in São Paulo. The meeting made it possible for economic actors from both countries to increase networking.

They also expressed willingness to activate joint action during the coming period, especially through organization of the 5th Session of the Political Consultation Committee, ahead of the joint commi
ttee meeting, which will establish a new phase for the Tunisian-Brazilian partnership, the same source said.

The Foreign Affairs Minister pointed out that Tunisia is following an economic model based on diversifying partners, particularly from emerging countries including Brazil, reiterating the need to develop cooperation in priority sectors, such as education, youth, sports, transportation, logistics, environment, sustainable development, scientific research, technological innovation, trade and investment.

Thanks to their geographical location, both Tunisia and Brazil should seize the opportunity to foster the South-South partnership in the direction of these two spaces.

He expressed Tunisia’s position regarding the centrality of the United Nations in the international system based on international law and the basic rules of international relations, equality, solidarity, equal opportunities.

The two ministers strongly condemned the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people, emphasizing the nee
d to lift the siege on the Gaza strip.

The meeting also focused on the need to fight against climate change as well as achieve green development, food security, and combat irregular migration.

By the end of the meeting, the two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the International Diplomatic Academy in Tunisia and Brazil’s Rio Branco Institute.

Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar received from his Brazilian counterpart a personal letter to the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Over 94 thousand quintals of grain harvested in Nabeul


Nabeul: The quantities of grain harvested in the governorate of Nabeul reached 94.7 thousand quintals since the start of the harvest till July 11, a progress rate of 90%.

The harvested quantities are broken down into durum wheat (86.136 thousand quintals), soft wheat (364 quintals) and barley (8.2 quintals), head of the field crops department at the Regional Agricultural Union Mohamed Charef Ben Maaouia told TAP.

According to preliminary estimates, the harvest in the region is expected to reach 686,000 quintals this season, made up of 380,000 quintals of durum wheat, 30,000 quintals of soft wheat, 271,000 quintals of barley and 4,000 quintals of rapeseed.

The grain harvest in 2023 was 26,000 quintals, compared with the forecast production of 150,000 quintals.

The area devoted to field crops in the governorate of Nabeul stands at almost 70 thousand hectares, including 23,730 hectares of rain-fed land and 1,910 hectares of irrigated land (durum wheat), 2,040 hectares of soft wheat and 18,070 hectares of bar
ley, i.e. an area of 45,750 hectares devoted to grain-growing and 2,429 hectares to vegetables and pastures, including 750 hectares of rapeseed, he specified.

Financing agreement for Oued Chaabouni industrial zone rehabilitation project


Sfax: A financing agreement for the Oued Chaabouni industrial zone rehabilitation project in Sfax was signed on July 11 in Tunis with the German Development Bank (KFW) as part of the Investment for Employment (IFE) initiative launched by the German government.

The project consists in particular in upgrading the infrastructure of the Oued Chaabouni industrial zone, first delegate in charge of managing the affairs of the governorate of Sfax Mohamed Nefti Gadouda said.

Works include notably the renovation of roads, electricity and sanitation networks, as well as car parks at a cost of TND 11 million, he added.

The project is expected to create 397 jobs and improve working conditions for 3,325 employees.

Sousse-STS: New bus trips linking Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport to tourist coastal towns


SOUSSE: The Transport Company of the Coast (French: STS) started operating regular land transport line services by bus linking the governorates of Mahdia, Monastir, Sousse and Nabeul, in transit through the Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport.

According to a report issued by TAV-Tunisie, the airport’s company will provide two daily services between the aforementioned governorates, transiting through the airport, which will significantly contribute to boosting its dynamics and connecting it to coastal cities.

Similarly, the number of shuttles between Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport and Enfidha city will be increased to eight per day, according to the same source.

An inauguration ceremony was held, on Thursday, at the Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport, under the supervision of the governor of Sousse and in the presence of the Director General of STS and officials of TAV-Tunisia.

Bac 2024: success rate of 43.52% for resit session and 55.6% for both sessions


Tunis: The success rate for the baccalaureate exam session has stood at 43.52%, i.e. 17,912 graduates out of a total of 4,115 candidates.

The overall success rate for the 2024 baccalaureate is therefore 55.6%, the Ministry of Education announced on Thursday.

The success rates for the resit session vary from one section to another.

The Sport section stood out with the highest pass rate for the resit session, at 62.54%.

A total of 217 candidates passed the exam, bringing the overall success rate for this section to 87.7%.

Tobacco control in Tunisia: WHO recommends banning sales to minors and increasing taxes


Tunis: Banning the sale of tobacco to minors and increasing taxes to step up tobacco control in Tunisia are among the main recommendations made by World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Tunisia Olfa Saïdi at a working session held on Thursday by the Committee on Health, Family, Social Affairs and the Disabled and the Committee on Finance and Budget.

During the session, which was attended by experts and representatives from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the WHO Office in Tunisia, Olfa Saïdi pointed out the shortcomings of Tunisian anti-smoking legislation, notably with regard to the ban on the sale of tobacco to minors.

During her presentation on tobacco control in Tunisia, “realities and challenges,” she touched on a number of figures and indicators related to this phenomenon, which costs Tunisia TND 2 billion a year.

On this occasion, the members of the WHO delegation reaffirmed the organisation’s willingness to collaborate with the MPs of the Assembly of People’s Re
presentatives (ARP) to work on improving the legislative framework in the health field.

They underlined the need to pool efforts and reinforce dialogue between researchers and decision-makers in order to define objectives based on accurate and realistic data.

For their part, the MEPs acknowledged the seriousness of smoking and the need to establish effective mechanisms to reduce it and protect young people, pointing out the importance of sport as an alternative, calling for more investment in this sector and increased public awareness of the issue, notably in interior regions.

Some MPs also spoke of the worsening health system in Tunisia, WHO’s poor performance, notably in terms of training and supervision, the lack of prevention systems and the organisation’s lack of intervention in this field.

Several MPs denounced the WHO’s failure to fulfil its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people, who have been victims of the Israeli bombardments in Gaza.

Tunisia signed 21 agreements in field of social security (Social Affairs Ministry)


Tunis: Tunisia has signed 21 bilateral agreements in the field of social security for the benefit of Tunisian expatriates with 5 Arab countries and 16 European countries including Italy, France and Italy,» the social Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The agreements seek to anchor the principle of equal treatment between citizens in the two countries in terms of rights and duties.

These agreements make it possible to preserve acquired rights and transferring benefits and entitlements and dues to countries of residence.
