Bobo-dioulasso: Ahmed Koama, known as Rahim, has achieved the distinction of becoming a doctor after successfully defending his doctoral thesis on health risks in gold mining sites. His defense took place on July 25, 2025, at INSA in Bobo-Dioulasso, where he received high praise and congratulations from the jury. Under the supervision of Professor Maxime K. Drabo and chaired by Professor Sanata Bamba, Koama's work was recognized for its contribution to the field of Health, Safety, and Environment.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Ahmed Koama spent nearly five years researching the theme of health risks at gold mining sites, culminating in his thesis defense. His study focused on two sites in the Southwest region of Burkina Faso, highlighting the health risks affecting various social groups, including gold miners and stakeholders such as those in the restaurant industry.
Koama, who previously worked as a health associate in ophthalmology, emphasized the need for public policy to address health risks at gold mining sites. He advocated for the establishment of health posts on these sites to ensure better public health management with the involvement of health workers.
Professor Maxime K. Drabo, the thesis director, underlined the scientific rigor of the research, noting its potential to provide reliable evidence for preventive measures against health risks. The research results were seen as valuable data for reducing identified risks.
Jury chair Professor Sanata Bamba highlighted the structured nature of Koama's research, which was organized around five axes. The study identified significant health risks, including those associated with chemical use, such as mercury, and noted a high incidence of infections, particularly sexually transmitted ones, at mining sites. The research also found that children under 12 accounted for 17% of those present at these sites.
The thesis results are expected to contribute to the development of public health policies, with an emphasis on raising awareness among decision-makers. Following feedback on his thesis document, Dr. Ahmed Koama pledged to incorporate amendments to further refine his work.
