Luanda: Unilateral and circumstantial initiatives to amend the proposed amendment to the Political Parties Law do nothing to strengthen multi-party democracy in the Angolan political landscape, MPLA parliamentarian Jorge Dombolo stated on Thursday. Jorge Dombolo made this statement while speaking at the 8th Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the 4th Legislative Session of the 5th Legislature of the National Assembly, during the declarations of vote on the Bill that amends the Political Parties Law.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the proposal, presented by the UNITA (largest opposition party) Parliamentary Group, aims to adapt some norms of the Political Parties Law to the Constitution and the electoral principles and rules of SADC. This includes making fair, among other aspects, the rules relating to the extinction of political parties and the creation and use of symbols of political party coalitions.
The parliamentarian noted that the proposal, for which the MPLA voted negatively, lacks legal validity to support changes to the current Law on Political Parties, under the terms of the articles contained in the Constitution of the Republic.
The politician also stated that the coalition system, seen as a new legal entity, represents a profound discussion and violation of the current political party system, as well as the elimination of some criteria, such as not reaching the required electoral percentage.
