Angola Aims to Become a Logistics and Maritime Hub in Atlantic Region

Luanda: The Angolan government has been working towards transforming Angola into a leading maritime and logistics hub in the Atlantic region, through modern ports and secure services, within the framework of international best practices to attract more direct private investment. The statement was made by the Minister of Transport Ricardo D'Abreu on Monday in Luanda at the opening ceremony of the International Maritime Organization (IMSAS) International Audit taking place on November 3 to 10.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Minister emphasized the strategic importance of the sea as a key asset for Angola's sustainable development and economic diversification. "The country has a coastline of more than sixteen hundred kilometers, establishing a vital link with the world through trade, energy, security and international cooperation," he stated.

He further elaborated that the economy currently holds significant potential for Angola's future. Beyond being a crucial source of employment, revenue, and innovation, it serves as a catalyst for logistics, fishing, energy, shipbuilding, coastal tourism, and international trade.

The head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) audit team, Prasad Panicker, highlighted the audit's objective to assess the extent to which Member States are applying IMO instruments through observation and compliance with the audit standard and general strategies. The team will also oversee the enactment of legislation concerning security and environmental aspects for ratified IMO instruments, as well as the implementation of systems related to compliance with the audit standard and ratified IMO instruments.
