Luanda: The political and security situation in the Great Lakes Region, particularly focusing on the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was the central topic during a meeting between Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and the European Union's Special Representative for the region, Johan Borgstam. The discussions took place on Friday in Luanda. According to Angola Press News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement indicating that the meeting involved an exchange of views on the developments of the conflict and the diplomatic efforts underway to achieve a peaceful resolution. Johan Borgstam shared insights into the activities conducted under his mission and provided an assessment of the tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with particular focus on the city of Goma's internal political situation. Borgstam expressed the European Union's appreciation for Angola's mediating role in the region and acknowledged the country's politic al and diplomatic efforts in recent years. Téte António reiterated Angola's dedication to United Nations principles, emphasizing respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful conflict resolution. Angola remains actively involved in peacekeeping efforts across Africa, especially in the Great Lakes region, which is recognized as a critical area for security and political stability on the continent. The region continues to face instability due to ongoing conflicts in eastern DRC. Within this context, Angola has been instrumental in African mediation and peace promotion mechanisms, as part of the African Union and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. As a mediator between Rwanda and the DRC, Angola has hosted numerous initiatives aimed at easing tensions, fostering political dialogue, and enhancing regional stability in recent years. The European Union continues to engage with the countries in the region through diplomatic initiative s, humanitarian aid, and support for peace, security, and sustainable development processes in the Great Lakes region.
