Luanda: The Minister of State and Head of the Military Office of the President of the Republic, Joo Ernesto dos Santos, called for reinforced international cooperation, mutual trust, and the institutional capacities of States as essential factors in responding to current threats to global security. Speaking at the opening of the Conference of Chiefs of Staff and Defense of Africa 2026 (ACHOD26), he emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration to tackle complex threats such as terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational organized crime. According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Ernesto addressed representatives of military structures from several African countries at the event, co-organized by the governments of Angola and the United States. He stressed the importance of strategic information sharing, interoperability between Armed Forces, and continuous training of personnel, recognizing that no single country can face these challenges alone. The minister linked security and development, noting the impossibility of sustainable economic growth without political and social stability. He also emphasized investments in technological innovation, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation as modernization priorities for African Armed Forces. Joo Ernesto underscored Angola's active role in peace promotion and regional stability, highlighting that hosting the meeting signifies recognition of its commitment to the African peace and security architecture. He reaffirmed Angola's dedication to peace, mediation, and the modernization of its Armed Forces. US Chargé d'Affaires Shannon Nagy Cazeau praised Angola as a key strategic partner in African security, highlighting the State Partnership Program with Ohio as a symbol of strengthened bilateral cooperation. She noted that a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa is a shared strategic interest, as no nation can address contemporary threats alone. Cazeau emphasized that lasting peace requires economic prosperity and strong institutions, vital for attract ing investment and boosting economic growth. She reiterated the United States' commitment to partnering with African countries, respecting their priorities, and supporting national capacities. The ACHOD26, co-organized by Angola and the United States, gathers Chiefs of Staff and Defense Ministers from over 40 African countries, along with representatives from Brazil, NATO, the State Partnership Program, and the private sector. The conference, themed "Stronger Together: Partnership for Security, Stability and Prosperity," focuses on maritime security, combating terrorism, and transnational crime, and strengthening regional cooperation for sustainable development.
