Angola Engages in Critical Maritime Transport Discussions at IMO Assembly

London: Angola is actively participating in the 34th General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which commenced on Monday and extends until December 3. This assembly is focused on crucial discussions regarding the future of the maritime transport sector.

According to Angola Press News Agency, a statement from the Ministry of Transport detailed the significant agenda set for this assembly. All 175 member states of the IMO, including Angola, are convening to deliberate on the trajectory of maritime transport for the coming decades. A pivotal aspect under consideration is the budget approval process, where member states will debate and cast votes on the organization's budget for the subsequent two years. This process is vital for funding the IMO's worldwide programs and initiatives.

The assembly is also tasked with electing the new IMO Council, which serves as the executive body overseeing the organization between assembly sessions. Discussions on enhancing maritime security are on the agenda, focusing on safety at sea, protection against piracy, and cybersecurity in navigation to bolster international standards.

The environmental challenges posed by maritime transport are another critical topic generating anticipation. The assembly aims to address these challenges, given the significant environmental impact associated with the sector.

Leading the Angolan delegation is Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime Affairs, and Ports, Rui Carreira, accompanied by specialized technicians from the Ministry of Transport. The 34th General Assembly, held at the IMO headquarters in London, stands as one of the most significant events on the global maritime calendar.
