Soyo: Angolan president Joo Lourenço inaugurated the country's first non-associated natural gas treatment plant in Soyo, Zaire province. This infrastructure is pivotal for enhancing national energy security and diversifying the economy. According to Angola Press News Agency, the inauguration ceremony involved the unveiling of a plaque and ribbon cutting by the Head of State, who was accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, and various officials. They viewed an institutional video showcasing the construction journey of this industrial unit, which began in October 2023. The plant, situated in the village of Kivinca Nvemba, spans an area of 100 hectares and can process around 350 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. A significant investment of 2.2 billion US dollars was made by the new gas consortium led by Azule Energy, in collaboration with TotalEnergies, Chevron, and Sonangol, under the oversight of the National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG). The project also involves the explor ation and production of non-associated gas from the shallow water fields of Quiluma and Maboqueiro. This development includes 13 production wells and two offshore platforms, located 40 kilometers off the Angolan coast. Additionally, the plant is integrated with an advanced pipeline system, featuring a triple 26+4+fiber optic package, and a submarine micro tunnel for secure and efficient maritime-land connectivity. The facility employs approximately 4,000 workers, with 78% being Angolan nationals, and has implemented a local content policy that has already directed about one billion dollars towards service contracts within Angola. The plant cements Soyo as a key energy hub in Angola. With a population exceeding 300,000, Soyo holds strategic importance in the oil and gas sector and benefits from its location by the Atlantic Ocean, while showing growth in infrastructure linked to industry and sports tourism. The use of non-associated natural gas is crucial, given its greater purity and availability, making i t strategic for domestic supply and export. Natural gas, being a cleaner energy option, is used for electricity production, domestic consumption, and as a raw material in industrial processes. In Angola, the rise of natural gas exports, which yielded 4.356 billion US dollars in the first nine months of 2022, marks a significant economic shift. This has changed the landscape since Angola LNG's operations began, enabling the use of gas previously burned at the wellhead. The inauguration of the Non-Associated Natural Gas Treatment Plant marks a strategic milestone in modernizing Angola's gas industry. It aligns with the policies outlined in Presidential Decree No. 7/18 and Decree-Law 10/21, which provide legal frameworks and incentives for the exploration and marketing of natural gas, encouraging investment and local content. By securing Soyo's role in the national economy, the plant enhances socio-economic development, creates job opportunities, and strengthens Angola's competitiveness in the gas sector.
