Soyo: The Head of State, Joo Louren§o, is en route to the municipality of Soyo in northern Zaire Province to inaugurate a new Natural Gas Processing Plant. Accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Louren§o, the President was seen off at the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport by Vice-President Esperan§a da Costa.
According to Angola Press News Agency, this strategic industrial project is anticipated to significantly impact the national energy sector, particularly the natural gas market. The processing unit currently employs around 4,000 workers, with a workforce composition of 78% Angolans and 22% expatriates.
The project, initiated in October 2023, forms part of the Novo G¡s Consortium's initiatives. This consortium includes the French company TotalEnergies, the Italian company Azule Energy, the American company Chevron, and the Angolan oil company Sonangol, coordinated by the National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG).
Upon reaching full operational capacity, the plant is expected to process up to 412 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day, marking a substantial advancement for Angola's gas industry. This infrastructure is pivotal for diversifying the national economy and enhancing the energy sector, with significant implications for job creation and the socio-economic development of the region.
Natural gas, primarily composed of methane and other light hydrocarbons, is a non-renewable energy source extracted from rock deposits. Though non-renewable, it is considered a cleaner alternative as it releases fewer pollutants compared to oil and coal.
Natural gas, naturally colorless and odorless, is artificially odorized with mercaptans for safety. It serves various purposes, including electricity generation in thermal power plants, domestic cooking, vehicle fuel in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG), and as a raw material in industrial processes like fertilizer and chemical production. Its versatility makes it a valuable energy source across different sectors.
