Angola Surpasses Tilapia Production Projections, Reaching 35,000 Tons Annually

Cuito: Angola is currently producing 35,000 tons of tilapia annually, surpassing initial projections set for the period 2022-2027. This announcement was made by Miguel Cabral, the Director-General of the Institute of Artisanal Fisheries (IPA), during a provincial technical workshop of the Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture Project (AFAP 2) held in Cuito city, central Bi© province.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources initially projected a production level of 10,000 tons per year for the 2022-2027 period. Cabral attributed the higher-than-expected production to the support from the Executive Branch toward producers and the commitment and investments from the business sector dedicated to tilapia production. Despite these achievements, challenges such as raw material shortages, particularly feed, and infrastructure issues persist.

Cabral highlighted several provinces, including Uge, Bengo, Cuanza Sul, Cuanza Norte, Cuando, and Bi©, as leading regions in tilapia production and commercialization in Angola. Despite the success in production, the country still experiences high demand for tilapia, indicating a gap between supply and population demand. The government aims to continue encouraging local producers and remains open to both foreign and national investments to boost large-scale tilapia production.

The Provincial Technical Workshop of the Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture Project (AFAP 2), organized by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, seeks to empower members of cooperatives, producers, and aquaculture entrepreneurs in Bi©. The goal is to enhance techniques and increase production levels to meet the growing demand for tilapia.
