Luanda: Angolan former Foreign Minister Manuel Domingos Augusto died on Friday, in Luanda, after a prolonged illness, according to a family source.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Manuel Domingos Augusto served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2020, following his role as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for the political sector between 2010 and 2012. Born on September 2, 1957, in Luanda, Augusto held a degree in Public International Law and a master's degree in Diplomacy, Diplomatic and Consular Law and Practice.
Throughout his career, he held various significant positions, including Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa from 2005 to 2010. He also served as Ambassador in Zambia from 1995 to 1999 and was the head of the first Mission to the Republic of South Africa between 1992 and 1994. Earlier roles included First Secretary of Angola in Nigeria from 1988 to 1992, head of the Western Countries Department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade from 1985 to 1988, and head of the Western Countries sector of the State Secretariat for Cooperation from 1981 to 1985.
Within the Angolan government, Augusto also served as Vice-Minister of Mass Media from 1999 to 2005. He began his career in media, working at Jornal de Angola from 1980 to 1981 and Angolan Public Television from 1976 to 1980. At the time of his death, he was serving as secretary of the Political Bureau for Foreign Affairs of the ruling party, MPLA.
