Luanda: The Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, announced on Monday that the Angolan government plans to improve public transportation in the country. These plans include introducing high-capacity projects and launching the Luanda surface metro in 2026.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister outlined the government's strategy for the movement of people and goods in Angola at the fourth edition of the Conversas Economia 100 Makas program. He stated that the government intends to complete all the necessary preparations this year to begin construction on the surface metro in 2026.
The minister emphasized that strengthening the urban mobility system with resources is not enough; structural issues must also be addressed to change the current situation in the country. He mentioned that the Program for the Improvement of Urban Mobility in Luanda (PRO-MMUL) was recently approved. This program includes railway, light rail, and bus rapid transit (BRT) initiatives, which are high-capacity systems that are easier to implement.
The program aims to solve mobility problems in Luanda by developing a new surface metro system, constructing overpasses, and creating high-capacity bus corridors. It also includes modernizing public transportation by strengthening the bus fleet and implementing a real-time control and monitoring system.
The minister highlighted that accelerated population growth in Luanda is one of the major issues in the infrastructure sector. It requires the government to make urgent decisions and implement programs. He warned that delaying decisions and implementation could worsen the situation. "If we take too long to decide and implementation is delayed, there will be more people and we won't have solutions. We're talking about solutions that should have been implemented 20 years ago when we started to notice population growth," he emphasized.
