Baku:Following the inauguration of the "Eternal Alliance" Memorial to the Victims of Political Conflicts, opposition and independent political leaders gathered to highlight the importance of collective memory and national healing in Angola's future.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the event featured remarks from several prominent figures who reflected on Angola's turbulent history and the path to lasting reconciliation. Abel Chivukuvuku, leader of PRA-JA Servir Angola, regarded the monument's opening as a significant milestone. He encouraged citizens to work collectively toward a unified society, emphasizing the need to build upon past tragedies and reconciliation efforts.
Benedito Daniel, president of the Social Renewal Party, described the structure as an "architectural marvel" that effectively combines physical design with collective remembrance. He highlighted its role in helping citizens process past suffering, understand the present, and pass on history to younger generations. Daniel also praised the Commission for the Implementation of the Reconciliation Plan in Memory of the Victims of Political Conflicts for their contribution to the project.
Florbela Malaquias, president of the Humanist Party of Angola, supported these views, calling the initiative a step that dignifies humanity after decades of national turmoil.
UNITA leader Adalberto Costa Junior attended the ceremony but did not make public statements to the press. Notably, UNITA withdrew from the reconciliation commission in 2024, citing breaches of foundational principles by the executive branch.
