Angolan President Arrives in Washington to Witness Key DRC/Rwanda Peace Agreement

Washington: President Joo Louren§o arrived in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday at the invitation of U.S. authorities to witness the signing of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.

According to Angola Press News Agency, upon arriving at Washington International Airport, the Angolan head of state was greeted by the minister of foreign affairs, T©te Ant³nio, and the Angolan ambassador to the United States, Agostinho Van-Dºnem. While in Washington, in his capacity as chairperson of the African Union (AU), President Louren§o will attend the signing of the peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda on Thursday. The agreement will be signed by Presidents F©lix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame.

Observers in Washington consider the Angolan president's presence an opportunity to highlight Angola's role in resolving conflicts in Africa and strengthening the African Union's efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region and Central Africa. This event represents an important step toward establishing credibility for the agreement and demonstrates that peace and security in the region remain priorities for the continental organization.

In recent years, Angola has played a pivotal role in numerous mediation initiatives in Central Africa and the Great Lakes region. President Joo Louren§o played a crucial role in fostering reconciliation between the DRC and Rwanda, as well as between Kigali and Kampala, in an effort to mitigate regional tensions.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been in Washington since Tuesday and is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday. The president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, F©lix Tshisekedi, arrived in Washington Wednesday. The signing of the agreement between the two countries is a significant step forward in consolidating peace in the DRC, which is facing persistent challenges related to instability and armed groups in several of its provinces.
