Angola’s Attorney General and UK Strengthen Cooperation for Asset Recovery

Luanda: The recovery of Angolan assets located abroad was at the center of a meeting held on Wednesday, in Luanda, between Angola's Attorney General of the Republic, Pedro Mendes de Carvalho, and a delegation from the International Anti-Corruption Coordination Center (IACCC), from the United Kingdom, headed by Michael Petkov. According to Angola Press News Agency, a press release from the Attorney General's Office sent to ANGOP, the meeting served to coordinate actions in the field of interinstitutional cooperation, especially in matters involving judicial collaboration in the fight against corruption, money laundering, and other crimes of an economic-financial nature. On the occasion, Pedro Mendes de Carvalho highlighted the good level of cooperation between the two institutions, highlighting the results achieved in the field of criminal investigation and asset recovery. He recalled that, within the scope of the partnership, Angolan magistrates benefited from training activities in matters related to crimi nal investigation, combating corruption, and money laundering. The Attorney General of the Republic considered the cooperation satisfactory and highlighted the readiness of the British authorities in responding to requests made by Angola. In turn, Michael Petkov classified the partnership with the Attorney General's Office as strategic and fruitful and considered Angola the main partner in the cooperation developed by the IACCC in this area. The British official reaffirmed the United Kingdom's commitment to supporting Angola in the processes of achieving justice, both in cases related to British territory and in other jurisdictions. According to Michael Petkov, the seven years of cooperation between the two institutions allowed significant advances and gave way to deepen collaboration through strengthening institutional capabilities and sharing information relevant to criminal investigation. The head of the British delegation also defended the inclusion of other Angolan institutions in training programs, ju dging by the role they play in combating economic and financial crime. At the end of the meeting, the parties analyzed the work agenda for the following two days, focusing on the assessment of requests for cooperation and the exchange of information relevant to the exercise of criminal action. The British delegation also included Ollie David of the IACCC and Sarah Jackson, First Secretary and Policy Advisor.
