Do Russians have war in their blood?

Published by
The Bangkok Post

The geopolitical views of my grandmother, Florence O’Driscoll, could have been summed up in seven words: the Germans have war in their blood. Even as a child I suspected that the world must be more complicated than that, but I never contradicted her. She came by those views the hard way. Most Irish Catholics of her time hated England, but she reserved her hatred for Germany because half the young men she had known were killed in World War I. She had to make sense of why Newfoundlanders were being killed by Germans thousands of kilometres from home, and that was her answer. During World War II … Continue reading “Do Russians have war in their blood?”

Weather forecasters expect some of the heavy downpours experienced across South Africa this week to clear up over the long weekend but warn more wet and windy conditions are brewing. The problem with basketball

Philippine Star

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”– Attributed to Albert Einstein It seems so painfully difficult to progress in the country’s unrequited love for basketball. That’s why many sportsmen continue to argue against it. And in some aspects, they’re not wrong. If it were possible (or allowed), there are other individual sports which, on the surface, would produce better results than basketball internationally, possibly at a lower cost. Swimming, athletics and gymnastics, individual sports wherein athletes compete in multiple events, can garner more med… Continue reading “The problem with basketball”

West Africa is experiencing a wave of coups that have toppled governments in Mali and Burkina Faso over the past year, with another attempt in Guinea-Bissau this month. Aggrieved military brass – US-trained and partnered – deposed elected presidents and claimed control of the state. The primary reason provided by coup leaders is that the elected governments and their Western partners had failed over the past decade to rid their hinterlands of jihadist militants, particularly after France’s move to trim down its force presence throughout the Sahel region.
