Luanda: The vice-governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), Domingos Pedro, has called on media outlets to play a more active role in the National System for the Prevention and Combat of Money Laundering, the Financing of Terrorism, and the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the statement was made during a workshop focused on fostering dialogue between the public and private sectors about the media's role in preventing and combating money laundering. This event was organized by the Financial Information Unit (UIF).
Pedro emphasized that the media are essential partners in enhancing transparency, financial literacy, and the integrity of the national financial system. He added that any strategy aimed at financial integrity would not be fully effective without the informed and responsible participation of society.
He noted that Angola has taken significant steps to fortify its framework against money laundering, terrorism financing, and the proliferation of mass destruction weapons, as demonstrated by Law No. 5/20, enacted on January 27.
Furthermore, Pedro stated that the country is dedicated to executing the action plan agreed upon with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). This process necessitates a coordinated effort between public institutions and private entities, with a focus on achieving tangible results rather than merely adhering to regulations.
Pedro asserted that the media should be recognized as a key component of the national system for preventing and combating financial crime. "Market integrity and public trust cannot be decreed. They are built every day through knowledge, transparency, and responsible scrutiny," he remarked.
He urged media professionals to maintain rigorous and responsible reporting, highlighting that their efforts are crucial in safeguarding the financial system's integrity and the nation's economic stability.
The workshop was attended by representatives from both public and private sectors, along with media professionals.
