Chairman of National Electoral Commission Takes Office in Parliament

Luanda: The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Manuel Pereira da Silva, assumed office for a second term during the 5th Extraordinary Plenary Meeting of the 3rd Legislative Session of the 5th Legislature of the National Assembly.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the re-candidacy of Manuel Pereira da Silva was approved in February by the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ). He was declared the winner of the curriculum competition for the highest position at the CNE, securing 91 points. This approval allows him to remain in the position for another five years.

The CSMJ highlighted that Manuel Pereira da Silva's experience as a long-standing magistrate and his leadership in the last general elections of 2022 were crucial factors in evaluating his candidacy. His academic training and professional merits also played a significant role in his reappointment.

Under article 107 of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, the CNE is an independent body responsible for organizing, executing, coordinating, and conducting electoral processes.

Additionally, before the inauguration, Parliament unanimously approved changes in the MPLA and UNITA parliamentary benches. The day's agenda also involved discussions and voting on internal matters, including the draft Resolution to approve the Reports and Accounts of the National Assembly for the fiscal years 2020 to 2023.

The debate extended to voting on draft resolutions confirming the composition of the AN Board of Directors and the replacement of the coordinator of the group of MPs residing in the province of Cuanza Sul. It is noteworthy that MPs from UNITA, the largest opposition party, exited the plenary hall before Manuel Pereira da Silva took office.
