Chokri Belaid case: “verdict is a first step towards truth” (Popular Current)

Tunis: The Popular Current party said the verdict in the Chokri Belaïd assassination case “is an important first step in the process of uncovering the truth, as the verdict only concerns the direct murderers.’

At dawn on Wednesday, the 5th Criminal Chamber specialising in terrorist cases at the Tunis Court of First Instance delivered its verdict in the case of the assassination of the martyr Chokri Belaïd.

The verdict was read out at a press conference held at the headquarters of the Tunis Court of First Instance.

The defendants in the case were sentenced to death and dismissal was handed down to others.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party stressed that “to get to the bottom of this affair, it is necessary to continue to reveal all the parties behind the assassination, as well as those involved in prolonging the affair and manipulating the files.

The judiciary should judge these people in the same way as the perpetrators of the crime, the party said.

On this occasion, the Popular Movement call
ed for the case of the party’s founder, the martyr Mohamed Brahmi, to be speeded up, pointing out that several attempts had been made to cover up the truth in this case.

Secretary-General of the Popular Current, Mohamed Brahmi, was assassinated on July 25, 2013, a few months after the assassination of the secretary-general of the Unified Democratic Patriots Party (PPD), Chokri Belaid.
