Firefighters Retrieve Body After Tragic Collapse at Biocom in Malanje

Luanda: The Civil Protection and Firefighters successfully retrieved the body of a 37-year-old Angolan citizen following a tragic workplace accident at the Bio-energy company (BIOCOM) situated in the municipality of Pungo a Ndongo, Malanje province. The incident occurred on Saturday night when part of the second floor of the factory collapsed, resulting in the worker's immediate death. According to Angola Press News Agency, the disclosure came on Monday from Julia da Conceiço, the spokesperson for the Civil Protection and Firefighters. The accident took place around 11:30 pm, and the rescue operation to extricate the victim's body commenced at 4:50 am. This operation was conducted in coordination with the Criminal Investigation Service and the National Police. Following the rescue, the victim's body was transported to the morgue of the Malanje Regional Hospital. Biocom, the first sugar-energy company in Angola, is located in the Capanda Agro-Industrial Park and represents the largest non-oil private investm ent in the nation. The company focuses on the integrated production of sugar, ethanol, and electricity derived from sugarcane biomass. It operates over a total area of 81,201 hectares, with more than 49,000 hectares designated as arable land, enabling a daily processing capacity of up to 12,000 tons of sugarcane. The company annually produces over 100,000 tons of sugar, supplying both white and brown sugar to the domestic market. It aims to meet a significant portion of national demand, with a goal of reaching more than 250,000 tons at maximum capacity. Additionally, Biocom produces 16 to 17,000 cubic meters of ethanol each year, catering to industries such as beverages, cosmetics, cleaning products, and healthcare. Furthermore, Biocom contributes to sustainable energy efforts by generating clean electricity from sugarcane bagasse. This energy is supplied to the National Transmission Grid (RNT), benefiting the northern region of Angola and the city of Malanje.
