Tax Administration Launches Advanced Customs System at Port of Luanda

Luanda: The General Tax Administration (AGT) launched the fifth-generation Automated Customs Data Processing System (ASY5) at the Port of Luanda on Monday. This cutting-edge system is designed to meet the evolving demands of international trade by employing advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Jose Leira, the Chairman of the AGT board of directors, stated that the implementation of ASY5 marks a "total disruption" from previously used systems and represents a major step forward in modernizing customs services. The new system aims to enhance control over customs operations by automating the verification of the origin, value, and consistency of declared goods, thereby bolstering efforts to combat illicit trade while facilitating legitimate commerce.

Leira emphasized Angola's pioneering role in adopting ASY5, a solution developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). He explained that the system is being rolled out in phases and has already been introduced in other regions, including Lobito, Namibe, and Cabinda. The Port of Luanda, which handles over 80 percent of the country's international transactions, is expected to benefit significantly from this technological advancement.

The launch event was attended by institutional representatives, AGT technicians, international partners, and sector operators, underscoring the collaborative effort in enhancing Angola's trade infrastructure.
