Cuban President Reaffirms Historic Ties with Angola

Luanda: Cuban President Miguel D­az-Canel Bermºdez and the leader of the Cuban Revolution, General Raºl Castro Ruz, have conveyed a joint message to the Angolan President, Joo Louren§o, reaffirming the enduring ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. The letter, delivered by Cuban Ambassador “scar Le³n Gonz¡lez during an audience with President Louren§o, emphasizes the importance of these historic relations.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the message reflects a mutual interest in strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation, especially in a year marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Angola and Cuba. Ambassador Gonz¡lez highlighted the significance of the message and the ongoing efforts to build on the consensus reached during high-level meetings between the two leaders in 2023.

During the meeting, discussions focused on following up on previous agreements and exploring new areas of collaboration. The ambassador noted that the current economic context in both countries presents an opportunity to consolidate and expand cooperative ties. The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations on November 15, 2025, is seen as a pivotal moment to deepen the friendship and expand cooperation between the two nations.

Angola and Cuba have maintained a strategic partnership characterized by political solidarity, mutual support, and technical exchange in various fields, including health, education, defense, economy, and culture. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on November 15, 1975, Cuba has significantly supported Angola, particularly during the armed conflict, sending numerous soldiers, doctors, teachers, and technicians.

Cuban doctors and technicians continue to provide crucial healthcare services in Angola, while Angolan students pursue medical training in Cuba. This collaboration has been instrumental in strengthening Angola's health system. In education, thousands of Angolans have graduated from Cuban institutions, with many now holding key positions in Angola.

Economically, the partnership encompasses various sectors, with Cuban experts providing technical assistance in development projects. Defense cooperation remains a cornerstone, with Cuba playing a pivotal role in training the Angolan Armed Forces.

Culturally and politically, both countries engage in joint events and exchanges, reinforcing the bonds between their peoples. The reciprocal visits by Presidents D­az-Canel and Louren§o in 2023 culminated in new bilateral agreements, setting the stage for future collaboration.

As Angola and Cuba approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, they aim to deepen cooperation in technology, science, higher education, and public health, envisioning a future built on mutual trust and shared experiences.
