Fishermen Achieve Record Catfish Catch of 13 Tons in Luquembo

Luquembo: Thirteen tons of catfish were caught at the end of December 2025 by fishing vessels in the Luando River, municipality of Luquembo, in Angola's Malanje province, as part of the annual routine fishing activity.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the information was provided by the municipal director for the Promotion of Economic and Integrated Development, Eduardo Tadeu Abrao. He highlighted that the activity involved 32 artisanal shipowners, corresponding to six families, with the fish intended for local consumption and the surplus sold after processing.

Eduardo Tadeu Abrao emphasized that this type of fishing takes place once a year, in December, marking the end of the fishing season in the municipality. He noted a significant increase in catch levels compared to the previous year, 2024.

The director specified that no other types of fish were caught during this process as the traps used are only suitable for catfish. The municipality of Luquembo shows potential in artisanal fishing, with malele, catfish, and tilapia being the predominant species in the Jombo and Luando rivers, as well as in the Sibondo, Catete, and Chanas de Liazili, Mungondua lagoons, among others.

Eduardo Tadeu Abrao also mentioned that the fishing sector in Luquembo has seen growth, which has allowed for a sufficient supply of fish for both consumption and commercialization, impacting the standard of living of local families. Fishing is considered the second factor of production and sustenance and income for families, following agriculture.
