Benguela: The Minister of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, Carlos Alberto dos Santos, announced plans to initiate the construction of 225 social housing units in the Graça neighborhood, as part of an initial package of 725 units. According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister revealed that this housing initiative is budgeted at 40 billion Kwanzas and aims to relocate individuals living in at-risk areas to safer locations approved by planning instruments. He also mentioned that the program will incorporate self-directed construction, allowing certain citizens to remain in designated areas with state assistance in materials and technical guidance. The minister highlighted that this initiative addresses ongoing housing issues in Lobito, with a second authorized package comprising approximately 1,392 houses, budgeted at 64 billion Kwanzas. This second phase will bring the total to over two thousand houses, with resources already approved. Carlos Alberto emphasized that the construction will occur in phases, with the first homes expected for delivery by 2026 and the remainder by 2027. He assured that the focus will be on quality construction, ensuring dignity for the residents. The government will also prioritize essential infrastructure like energy, water, access roads, technical networks, and social facilities. The minister stressed the importance of local business involvement, highlighting Benguela's strong businesses that have supported the community during critical times. He anticipates their participation in self-construction and infrastructure development. Regarding the Cavaco River protection dikes, Carlos Alberto's team is assessing emergency works and preparing studies for definitive interventions. The minister mentioned receiving academic theses from local scholars, which will contribute to technical solutions for river interventions. Similar projects are planned for the Catumbela and Coporolo Rivers, along with road improvements. The recruitment for definitive interventions will commence after project validation, expected by September or October. Addressing delays in the Tchapanguele market works, he cited the absence of a Wastewater Treatment Plant and a thermal power plant, both of which are now resolved. The market's infrastructure is 90% physically executed, with completion anticipated in the second half of 2026. The minister concluded by noting the contractor's cooperation and the ongoing steady pace of the project's progress.
