Luanda: At least 28 people have died, 17 sustained injuries, and three remain missing in the provinces of Luanda and Benguela due to severe rainfall on Saturday, as reported by the Civil Protection and Fire Services (SPCB) on Sunday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, a provisional report from SPCB revealed that the heavy rains resulted in the flooding of 6,752 homes and the collapse of 114, impacting 6,871 families-totaling 34,355 people across both provinces. The province of Benguela experienced significant casualties, with 22 fatalities, 13 injuries, and two individuals missing. Additionally, the rains led to the collapse of 114 houses, damage to 19 others, and affected 12 boats, with nine rescued and three removed. Four vehicles were also dragged away by the floodwaters.
In Luanda, the capital city, the bulletin reported six deaths and one missing person. The severe weather conditions affected 33,785 people, comprising 6,757 families. Infrastructure damage included the flooding of 6,752 homes, damage to four, and the destruction of one. Further damage included six fallen trees, the overflow of three retention basins, the fall of two electrical poles, and flooding of three health centers, among other damages.
