Joo Louren§o Advocates Greater Exchange Between Angola and C´te d’Ivoire

Luanda: The President of the Republic, Joo Louren§o, on Thursday in Luanda advocated for increased exchanges between Angola and C´te d'Ivoire to foster stronger friendship and solidarity between the peoples of the two African countries. In a message to his Ivorian counterpart, Alassane Ouattara, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of C´te d'Ivoire's Independence, marked on August 7, Joo Louren§o showed great value to the relations between the two nations.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan statesman mentioned that these relations have been following a path that will evolve into bilateral cooperation initiatives with tangible results. He congratulated the Ivorian people due to the aforementioned anniversary, which he considered to be of great symbolism, and took the opportunity to wish prosperity to the people of C´te d'Ivoire.

Angola and C´te d'Ivoire intensified cooperation by signing 14 cooperation agreements in June 2024, covering sectors such as agriculture, oil and gas, health, tourism, and information technology. These agreements resulted from a state visit by Angolan President Joo Louren§o to C´te d'Ivoire and aimed to discuss bilateral relations, including the reopening of direct flights between Luanda and Abidjan to stimulate trade and economic relations.

In December 1958, C´te d'Ivoire became an autonomous republic within the French Community, following a referendum that granted community status to all members of the former French West African federation. The country, which is bordered to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, to the east by Ghana, to the south by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Liberia and Guinea, achieved independence on August 7, 1960, and allowed its community membership to cease. The commercial city of Abidjan became the country's capital.
