Luanda Launches Polio Vaccination Campaign Targeting Over 1 Million Children

Luanda: Over 1.9 million children aged zero to five years old are expected to be vaccinated against polio during a three-day campaign from March 26 to 28 in Luanda, as part of efforts to prevent an outbreak affecting neighboring countries such as Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the information was disclosed by the provincial coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), Felismina Neto. She noted that the initiative is part of national measures to address the risk of importing cases, especially considering the movement of people in border areas.

Felismina Neto explained that the vaccination strategy will primarily be door-to-door, with additional efforts in areas with high population density. "We will work house to house, but also in markets, schools, nurseries, bus stops, and interprovincial connection points, to ensure that no child is left out," she stated.

The official emphasized that polio is a highly contagious disease that can be prevented through vaccination, and its spread can be halted with effective campaigns. Health authorities are carrying out several preparatory steps, including the development of micro-plans, team training, and community mobilization to ensure the campaign's success.

She urged families to cooperate by allowing the teams to vaccinate their children, stressing that this cooperation is crucial to protecting the province against polio.
