MPs Call for Strengthened Measures Following Fatal Benguela Floods

Luanda: Parliamentary groups represented in the National Assembly expressed regrets on Thursday over the deaths caused by the heavy rains that have hit several regions of Angola, particularly the province of Benguela. They also called for the strengthening of prevention measures and solidarity with the affected families.

According to Angola Press News Agency, in a political statement at the opening of the 8th Ordinary Plenary Meeting, Reis Jºnior, the president of the MPLA (ruling party) Parliamentary Group, expressed sorrow over the flood victims and extended solidarity to the bereaved families and citizens who lost property. He also extended this sentiment to victims of road accidents in the country.

The statement from MPLA also called for national unity, urging against divisive rhetoric and recalling the events of 1992 as a significant moment that calls for political responsibility and democratic maturity.

MP Florbela Malaquias from the Angola Humanist Party (PHA) emphasized that the Benguela floods, which resulted in loss of life, require a preventive approach focused on planning, execution, and maintenance of infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

FNLA MP Nimi a Simbi echoed this sentiment, urging authorities to adopt preventive measures to reduce the occurrence and impact of similar events, while also expressing solidarity with affected families.

PRS MP Benedito Daniel expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and conveyed messages of courage to those impacted by the calamity, reaffirming solidarity with all affected.

UNITA MP Albertina Ngolo offered condolences to the families of the flood victims in Benguela, noting that the human losses could have been mitigated with measures such as dredging rivers and better land management. UNITA also appealed for the resettlement of displaced populations and the replacement of lost property.

The ongoing heavy rains in the country continue to cause human and material damage, particularly in vulnerable areas, prompting repeated calls for more effective public policies in risk management and disaster prevention.
