Pope’s Visit to Angola to Bolster Unity Among Christian Churches

Luanda: Leaders of various religious denominations in the province of Cunene have expressed that the forthcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Angola, scheduled from April 18 to 21, is expected to enhance cooperation and unity among Christian churches in the nation.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the interlocutors highlighted the Pope's significance not only to the Catholic community but also to other religious congregations. Nsumbo Manuel, a representative of the Evangelical Baptist Church (IEBA) in Cunene, described the Pope's visit as a moment of hope and faith renewal. He remarked that Angola is a nation deeply rooted in religious belief, which continues to inspire hope and moral values, promoting the common good.

Manuel further added that despite religious differences, Christians share fundamental principles found in the Holy Bible, such as love for one's neighbor, peace promotion, human dignity defense, and social justice practice. He expressed hope that the Pope's visit would inspire Angolans to renew their faith and strengthen peaceful coexistence, reinforcing values contributing to a more just and supportive society.

Antonio Chivinga, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Cunene, noted that Pope Leo XIV represents the leadership of one of the world's largest secular churches. He emphasized that the Pope's arrival would bring greater international visibility to Angola, placing it at the center of global conversations and enhancing its diplomatic standing.

Joo Gimbi, representing the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA) in Cunene, shared expectations of a message of comfort, hope, and salvation from the Pope that would resonate with the Angolan people and the African continent at large.

Pope Leo XIV's tour will encompass four African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Angola. In Angola, his itinerary includes masses in Luanda, Muxima, Icolo e Bengo province, and Saurimo (Lunda-Sul). The Pope will also visit a nursing home and meet with Angolan state and religious leaders. This marks the third papal visit to Angola, following John Paul II in 1992 and Benedict XVI in 2009.
