President of Botswana’s Working Visit to Angola Aims to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Luanda: The President of the Republic of Botswana, Duma Boko, is set to commence a working visit to Angola this Thursday, marking a significant step in enhancing the bilateral relations between the two nations. His visit underscores the ongoing efforts to fortify political and economic ties, with a particular emphasis on various sectors including mining, agriculture, and energy.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the official itinerary released on Wednesday details that upon his arrival, President Boko will head to the Presidential Palace for a meeting with Angola's Head of State, Joo Louren§o. The agenda for the day includes an official lunch before President Boko's scheduled departure from the palace. His visit to Angola will conclude with his return to Botswana on Friday morning.

This visit highlights the strategic relaunch of cooperation relations between Angola and Botswana since 2023, focusing on sectors such as mining, agriculture, and energy. Looking ahead to 2025, both nations plan to deepen their bilateral consultations to address challenges within the global diamond market and strengthen regional integration. Botswana, a leading diamond producer, collaborates with Angola on extraction, cutting, and marketing.

The two countries signed the Luanda Agreement in June 2025 to promote natural diamonds and bolster sector cooperation. Initiatives in the oil and energy sector include the supply of Angolan petroleum derivatives to Botswana and projects for electrical energy transmission and renewable source development. In agriculture, Angola seeks Botswana's expertise in cattle repopulation, focusing on importing cattle, semen, embryos, and cooperating in animal vaccine production.

Environmental and tourism collaborations involve water resource management and ecotourism promotion, leveraging shared biodiversity, including significant elephant populations. The Luanda Agreement, a key instrument signed in June 2025, aims to enhance natural diamond promotion with SADC countries.

The Bilateral Joint Commission continues to monitor agreement implementations in education, health, and mining sectors. Efforts to facilitate mobility include potential visa exemptions, a direct air connection between capitals, and finalizing an agreement to prevent double taxation, encouraging mutual investments. President Joo Louren§o's state visit to Gaborone in 2023 further solidified these bilateral efforts.
