Standard Bank Angola to Invest in Rehabilitation and Equipping of School Libraries

Huambo: At least nine school libraries in the provinces of Huambo, Namibe, and Cabinda are set to be rehabilitated and equipped over the next four years as part of the Libelinha project spearheaded by Standard Bank-Angola. The initiative has been allocated an investment of 900 million kwanzas. According to Angola Press News Agency, the first phase of this project involves delivering three libraries to public primary schools in Huambo: No. 1 (So Pedro), No. 34 (Cidade Alta), and No. 53 (Académico). These libraries are expected to be handed over on Tuesday. Rosemaire Luís, Director of Sustainability at Standard Bank-Angola, stated that the initiative is driven by the belief in the importance of reading and its ability to foster thinking, dreaming, and personal transformation. Each library will house approximately 1,000 books and teaching resources to promote literacy. Luis also mentioned that 90 teachers will be trained to manage these libraries and promote community initiatives, ensuring that the spaces ben efit students, families, and the wider community. The project involves collaboration with public and private entities that support the mission of enhancing libraries as educational hubs. The initiative's impact goes beyond mere numbers, focusing on the excitement of children discovering books, the empowerment of teachers, and the community's engagement with schools as centers of knowledge. The Libelinha project aims to rehabilitate library facilities, train staff, and organize literacy events, with a focus on sustainability. Standard Bank Angola, which will celebrate its 16th anniversary in September, continues to prioritize access to credit across various economic sectors.
