Students with Visual Impairments in Malanje Empowered with Adapted Smartphones

Luanda: At least 10 students with visual impairments, integrated into the National Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Angola (ANCA) in Malanje, received 10 smartphones specifically adapted to meet their needs. This initiative is part of the "Computer Science in the Palm of Your Hand" project.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the effort is a result of a partnership between ANCA and the Norwegian Association of the Blind, and is being implemented in ten provinces across the country. The provincial director of ANCA, Ado Balanga, highlighted that the initiative aims to enhance inclusion and autonomy for beneficiaries, which include young people and adults attending secondary education at various institutions, notably the Comandante Cuidado Teacher Training College.

Balanga explained that the devices are tailored for individuals who rely primarily on touch, incorporating applications that ensure full autonomy in usage without external assistance. He emphasized the importance of this donation as a valuable research tool, enabling students to download books and access educational content that supports their learning process.

Balanga expressed satisfaction with the initiative, as it aligns with the association's core objectives of defending rights, promoting, and including visually impaired individuals. Despite the advancement represented by the project, he noted ongoing challenges faced by ANCA, including a shortage of qualified personnel in the public service, inadequate facilities, and a lack of teaching materials and transportation.

In Malanje, ANCA operates in the municipalities of Malanje, Cacuso, Qu©ssua, Calandula, and Cambundi-Catembo. The association currently boasts 400 members in the province, with students being the primary focus of its support initiatives.
