Luanda: Angola advocated on Thursday in New York, for strengthening mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, emphasizing that the effective implementation of UN Security Council resolutions is a decisive factor for the credibility of the multilateral system.
According to Angola Press News Agency, this position was reiterated by Angola's representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Francisco Jos© da Cruz, during the Security Council Open Debate on the theme "Strengthening Mechanisms for the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes: Follow-up to Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025)."
On that occasion, the Angolan diplomat commended the Congolese presidency of the Security Council, viewing the debate as a significant opportunity to reinforce the international community's commitment to conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
In his remarks, Ambassador Francisco Jos© da Cruz highlighted that, one year after the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2788 (2025), the main challenge lies in ensuring its effective, consistent, and impartial implementation, arguing that the Security Council's credibility depends on its ability to translate political decisions into concrete results.
"Political commitment must translate into concrete and measurable actions. When implementation fails, trust in multilateralism, international law, and the United Nations' capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts is undermined," he stated.
He also highlighted that Africa continues to face complex security challenges characterized by terrorism, armed groups, unconstitutional changes of government, transnational organized crime, and humanitarian crises. He noted that, in this context, purely military responses are insufficient to guarantee lasting peace. According to the diplomat, conflict prevention requires an integrated approach based on preventive diplomacy, mediation, inclusive political dialogue, and solutions led by the affected countries themselves, with the support of regional organizations and international partners.
In this context, he reaffirmed Angola's active role in promoting peace on the African continent through its mediation efforts in the Great Lakes region and close cooperation with the African Union and Regional Economic Communities.
