Luvo: More than 80 million kwanzas destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were seized by the Customs and Fiscal Police on Saturday in the municipality of Luvo, Angolan northern Zaire province. The operation prevented a significant amount of money from leaving the country illicitly.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the spokesperson for the National Police in Zaire, Superintendent Lus Bernardo, informed the press on Sunday that during the micro-operation, an additional nine thousand and 450 dollars were also seized. This money was similarly intended for the neighboring DRC.
Superintendent Bernardo explained that the funds were being transported by three individuals, two from the DRC and one Angolan. The money was camouflaged inside bathtubs with bottles of mineral water, aiming to deceive border police forces. He noted, "Two of those detained are citizens of the DRC, who were transporting 54.9 million kwanzas to buy dollars in the neighboring country." The remaining amounts were confiscated on clandestine access roads leading to the DRC.
The operation was a joint effort, including officers from the Municipal Section for the Investigation of Criminal Offenses of the National Police Command in the border municipality of Luvo. The seized money was handed over to the General Tax Administration (AGT) in Luvo for safekeeping, while the three individuals involved were directed to the appropriate authorities for legal proceedings.
The border municipality of Luvo lies 60 kilometers north of the city of Mbanza Kongo, the capital of Zaire province, and shares a border with the DRC.
