Luanda: Angolan eastern Moxico Leste province has reported two suspected cases of monkeypox, according to the director of the provincial health office, Benilde Miguel. The announcement was made on Saturday as the health authorities continue their efforts to contain the potential spread of the virus. According to Angola Press News Agency, the suspected cases are currently isolated, and laboratory results are awaited to confirm the diagnosis. The individuals in question were identified in the municipality of Luau. Miguel has urged the local population to remain calm and focus on reinforcing both individual and collective prevention measures to mitigate any potential risk. In addition, Miguel highlighted that a vaccination campaign against monkeypox is ongoing, targeting at-risk groups such as nurses, National Police officers, firefighters, and government members. So far, 1,400 people have received vaccinations as part of this campaign. Miguel further stressed the importance of adhering to preventive measures , including regular hand washing, avoiding the sharing of personal items, and wearing masks in crowded areas. Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that Angola has recorded a total of 28 confirmed monkeypox cases, including one fatality, thus far. Monkeypox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with infected individuals or animals. It manifests through symptoms like fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and blister-like skin rashes.
