UK Pledges Support for Benguela Flood Victims Amidst Extensive Damage

Luanda: The United Kingdom's ambassador to Angola, Bharat Joshi, expressed his country's willingness to support victims of the recent floods caused by the breach of the Cavaco River protection dike in Benguela province. This announcement came on Wednesday during a meeting with Mara Quiosa, the vice-president of the ruling MPLA.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the ambassador highlighted ongoing consultations with the Angolan government to determine the most effective ways to assist those affected. Joshi emphasized the importance of providing necessary support, referencing the collaborative effort with Angola during last year's cholera outbreak.

The flood, described as one of the most severe in recent years, has resulted in extensive damage to residences, as well as road and rail infrastructure, following the breach on the left bank of the Cavaco River. During his visit to the MPLA headquarters, Joshi expressed solidarity with Angola and discussed collaborative projects focusing on women and children, aiming to enhance their access to opportunities in infrastructure development.

In discussing bilateral relations, Joshi highlighted the strength of the partnership between Angola and the United Kingdom, underscoring the presence of British companies in Angola and their contribution to job creation. He also encouraged Angolan companies to export to the UK, citing significant benefits for participating institutions.

Joshi pointed out the ongoing partnership in constructing critical infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, ports, and airports, which aligns with Angola's development goals. The positive relationship between the two nations, established in 1986, continues to expand, focusing on politics, commerce, and energy, with strategic interests in oil, mining, finance, agriculture, and infrastructure.
