Zaire: Over 22,000 new orange, lemon and tangerine saplings have been introduced in Zaire province over the last three years by the agriculture sector, replacing older species that had been in use for over 15 years. Pedro Gouveia da Silva, director of the provincial office of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing the region's citrus production capacities, particularly for export purposes.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the replacement of these older species is part of a strategic plan involving collaboration with the Municipal Administrations and the Institute of Agricultural Research. This coordinated effort has successfully identified seed varieties that not only adapt well to the local environment but also show resilience against pests over time.
Zaire province is recognized for its agricultural potential, with a variety of crops being cultivated extensively. These include cassava, jinguba, beans, corn, sesame, macunde beans, bananas, and sugarcane, alongside citrus fruits. The introduction of the new saplings is expected to further bolster the province's agricultural output and export capabilities.
