National Salvation Front calls for release of “political prisoners”

The National Salvation Front called for the immediate release of “political detainees” and an end to the “unjust” legal proceedings against them.

In a statement Monday, the Front warned against the “instrumentalisation of the judiciary and security apparatus by the coup authorities” which “could drag the country into chaos marked by a conflict between society and the State.”

The Front denounced the continuation of “random arrests of political activists and civil society activists based on false accusations,” mentioning particularly former MP (from the Ennahdha movement) Sahbi Atig and former president of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries, Abdelmajid Ezzar and lawyer Abdelaziz Essid who was summoned to appear before an investigating judge.

It called on all political and civil forces to overcome ideological differences “so as to restore constitutional legitimacy and develop a consensual plan of economic reforms capable of saving the democratic experience and bringing the country out of the economic crisis.”

ARP: “All blocs will be represented in ARP bureau and committees” (statement)

All parliamentary blocs will be represented in the Bureau of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP) and in the 13 parliamentary committees thanks to proportional representation, said MP Abderrazek Aouidet. from the Echaab movement, adding that no bloc will be able to monopolise a committee.

Aouidet told TAP Monday independent MPs will be treated as a parliamentary group and therefore the distribution of MPs to committees will include the 7 entities within the parliament, namely the 6 blocs and the independents.

The statement by the Echab MP came during a session held on Tuesday at the Bardo Palace to announce the quota of parliamentary blocs in the parliamentary bureau and committees.

Aouidet pointed out that the independent MPs will be the most represented in the parliamentary committees and the parliamentary bureau in terms of their number.

The ARP’s rules of procedure confirmed the formation of 13 committees, including the Committee on General Legislation, the Committee on Rights and Freedoms, the Committee on Foreign Relations, International Cooperation and the Affairs of Tunisians Abroad, the Committee on Finance and Budget, and the Committee on Agriculture and Food Security.

Tunisia-Egypt: Irregular migration and fight against terrorism discussed

Irregular migration and the fight against terrorism in the Mediterranean region were at the centre of a meeting, on Monday, at the Bardo Palace, between Parliament Speaker Brahim Bouderbala and Egypt’s Ambassador to Tunisia, Iheb Fahmi.

The two parties highlighted the convergence of views between Tunisia and Egypt on various current issues, stressing the importance of intensifying consultation between the two countries on these issues and coordinating the positions of the parliaments of both countries, particularly at the level of regional and international parliamentary bodies and organisations, said a statement of the ARP.

Bouderbala highlighted the solidity of the historical relations between the two countries and the dynamism that characterizes them at all levels, insisting on the need to put them at the service of the development of bilateral cooperation in several areas, such as the economy, investments, trade and tourism.

ARP Speaker also highlighted the contribution of parliamentary relations in the enrichment and diversification of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, mentioning the role of parliamentary friendship groups in achieving these objectives.

For his part, the Egyptian ambassador welcomed the solidity of the historical Tunisian-Egyptian relations which are constantly developing, particularly in the cultural field, mentioning the visit made in April 2021, in Egypt, by the President of the Republic, Kais Saied.

This visit, he said, has opened several prospects for cooperation and contributed to the diversification of its fields.

Irregular migration at heart of meeting between President Saied and Italian Interior Minister

President Kais Saied met Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Pintedosi, on Monday at Carthage Palace.

The meeting focused on the issue of irregular migration, according to a statement from the Presidency.

President Saied stated that stated that “the security approach has shown its limits in addressing the phenomenon of irregular migration”.

The number of victims is increasing by the day”, he lamented, adding that “criminal networks of smugglers are taking advantage of the insecurity that leads migrants to risk their lives to reach the other side of the Mediterranean.”

The President emphasised the need to tackle the root causes of this phenomenon in order to eradicate it, as part of a new collective approach.

In this context, he proposed holding an international meeting between the Heads of State and Government or Ministers of the Interior of the countries affected by the migration crisis as soon as possible.

The aim is to agree on means of cooperation to tackle the causes of the phenomenon of irregular migration.

The meeting between the President of the Republic and the Italian Minister of the Interior was also an opportunity to discuss cooperation and friendship between the two neighbouring countries and peoples, the statement reads.
