Vancouver: FIFA has imposed a five-match ban on Assim Madibo, midfielder of the Qatar national team, following the tackle that caused a serious injury to Ismael Koné during the match against Canada, played in the second round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. The incident occurred five minutes into the second half. Initially, Chilean referee Cristián Garay showed only a yellow card to the Qatari player, but after reviewing the images decided to send him off with a straight red card. Madibo left the field visibly shaken and in tears. According to Angola Press News Agency, a statement released Wednesday by FIFA confirmed the five-match suspension for the Qatari national team player, classifying the infraction under the article relating to "serious foul play" in the Disciplinary Code. The organization also clarified that the player can appeal the decision to the FIFA Appeals Committee. The sanction comes after the tackle resulted in a fracture of Koné's left leg. The Canadian midfielder was removed fro m the stadium and transported to a hospital in Vancouver, where he underwent surgery. To date, neither the Canadian national team nor Sassuolo, the club he represents in Italy, have released a timeline for his return to competition.
