New delhi: Angola's ambassador to UNESCO, CSndida Teixeira, emphasized the importance of preserving cultural identity and respecting diversity during her speech in New Delhi, India. She addressed the topic while participating in the 20th session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the ambassador reiterated her commitment to UNESCO's mandate and values. Angola, a signatory to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, is serving a four-year term as a member of the committee. This highlights the country's dedication to cultural preservation on a global stage.
In a significant achievement for Angola, the traditional art of Sona, which involves geometric designs in sand, was inscribed on the list of intangible heritage in 2023. Further efforts are being made in collaboration with UNESCO to inscribe the musical rhythm semba in the future, showcasing Angola's rich cultural heritage.
The 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee is being held by UNESCO in New Delhi and will continue until Saturday, bringing together representatives from around the world to discuss the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.
