Luanda: The Minister of Energy and Water, Joo Borges, announced on Monday the inauguration of the Luau photovoltaic park, a significant step towards Angola's commitment to clean and renewable energy sources. The new solar park boasts a capacity of 32.2 megawatts, demonstrating the country's dedication to an energy future that is sustainable, accessible, and environmentally responsible.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Minister Borges emphasized that the Luau plant aligns with the government's strategic vision for the energy sector, aiming to provide more energy to the population in a technically, economically, and environmentally sustainable manner. The park is a testament to public policy focused on social and territorial inclusion, ultimately improving the quality of life for Angolans.
The minister outlined several tangible benefits of the project, including stable energy production, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and enhanced rural economies. The solar park is set to offer sustainable energy access to industries, schools, and health units, marking a significant shift in the region's energy landscape.
Borges noted that the electrification of Luau is crucial not only for local development but also for the success of the Lobito Corridor, which is expected to become more competitive and socially impactful. The project will supply energy to over 100,000 people, making it the largest solar park with storage in Angola to date, underscoring the government's commitment to advanced and efficient energy solutions.
The minister highlighted that the new infrastructure would significantly cut down on the country's fossil fuel dependence, with an expected annual saving of over 17 million liters of fuel. This reduction will also contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing Angola's pledge to combat climate change.
The Luau plant is part of a broader initiative to electrify 60 localities across the provinces of Moxico, Lunda-Norte, Lunda-Sul, Malanje, Bi©, and Moxico-Leste. Since the inauguration of the solar park, the energy production capacity in Moxico-Leste has increased to 57.6 megawatts, providing electricity access to over 20,000 families, a significant rise from the previous years.
