Angola Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency in the Extractive Industry

Luanda: The Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, JSnio Corrêa Victor, on Monday reiterated Angola's commitment to transparency and sustainability in the diamond industry aimed at generating value for communities. According to Angola Press News Agency, he reaffirmed this commitment during the 41st World Diamond Congress of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), taking place in Singapore, according to a press release from the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas sent to ANGOP today. In his address, he highlighted the country's ambition to rise from third to second place among the world's largest diamond producers by 2030. This goal is supported by structural reforms, investment attraction, and strategic partnerships with leading international companies. He singled out the Luele mine in Lunda Sul as the main driver of national diamond production growth and emphasized the potential of the future Chiri mine, operated by Rio Tinto. JSnio Corrêa Victor also expressed Angola's ongoing co mmitment to transparency and traceability, evidenced by its participation in the Kimberley Process, membership in the EITI, and partnership with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Regarding the impact of natural diamonds, the Secretary of State discussed the sector's contribution to employment, vocational training, and the development of producing communities. He highlighted the role of the Brilhante Foundation and the Saurimo Diamond Development Hub in creating added value and facilitating the local processing of diamonds. On the commercial front, he highlighted SODIAM and the Angola Diamond Exchange as strategic instruments for strengthening traceability and transparency in the marketing of national diamonds. JSnio Corrêa Victor stated that the country remains aligned with the Luanda Agreement through the contribution of 1% of rough diamond revenues toward the international promotion of natural diamonds. He invited the global diamond community to participate in the International Mining and Diamon d Conference, to be held in Luanda in November.
