Luanda: A project to install 34,423 prepaid electricity meters in Bi© province was launched by ENDE last Friday. The installation of the new meters-which will join the existing 6,662 units, bringing the total to 41,085-began with a ceremony in the "500 Casas" neighborhood on the outskirts of Cuito city, Bi© province.
According to Angola Press News Agency, a statement from the National Electricity Distribution Company (ENDE) indicated that the project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), aims to modernize the billing system and improve energy consumption management. The statement adds that, once completed, the project will ensure fairer and more transparent energy consumption and help reduce billing-related complaints. It also urges the public to adopt good practices and avoid vandalizing the equipment.
Through the implementation of prepaid meters, ENDE also expects to improve collection efficiency, reduce commercial losses, and increase revenue. In Bi© province, located in central Angola, there are a total of 44,137 registered consumers: 6,662 are on the prepaid system, while the remaining 37,475 are on the postpaid system.
Since 2019, Bi© province has been connected to the national electricity grid via the Laºca Dam. The grid currently serves the municipalities of Cuito (the capital), Chipeta, Catabola, and Camacupa-four of the 19 municipalities that make up Bi©'s political and administrative divisions. The provincial grid is also supplied by energy generated by the Cuito photovoltaic plant-inaugurated in August 2025 with a capacity of 14.6 megawatts-and the Camacupa dam, inaugurated in 2024 with a capacity of 1.8 megawatts. In the remaining municipalities, electricity is supplied via generator sets.
