Angolan and DRC Presidents Discuss Eastern Congo Security Situation

Luanda: Angolan President Joo Louren§o met with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President F©lix Tshisekedi on Thursday to discuss the security situation and efforts to consolidate peace in the eastern DRC. The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Luanda, lasted approximately an hour and a half and served as a diplomatic consultation. Both leaders reviewed the evolution of the armed conflict in the eastern DRC and discussed ongoing regional and international initiatives aimed at pacifying the region.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Louren§o and F©lix Tshisekedi have been in regular contact as part of diplomatic efforts to promote a negotiated solution to the crisis in eastern Congo, a region that has faced persistent instability for nearly 30 years due to the actions of armed groups. The DRC President is currently in Luanda to participate in the 3rd edition of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) initiative. This event is being held under the theme "Call for Peace, an End to Wars, and Respect for International Law."

The opening session of the UNAOC gathering is scheduled for this Thursday, with proceedings continuing until Friday. Representatives from governments, international organizations, and civil society are expected to participate. The initiative aims to strengthen intercultural dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and the international community's commitment to promoting peace, stability, and respect for international law.

The conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has been ongoing for about 30 years, with its origins tracing back to earlier events. In recent years, the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, beginning in 2021, has led to a renewed deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation. This resurgence has resulted in millions of internally displaced persons and increased tensions between the DRC and Rwanda.
