UN Highlights Angola’s Role in Promoting Peace and Stability

United nations: United Nations Under-Secretary-General and high representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel ngel Moratinos, stated on Thursday that Angola's example demonstrates that peace, once achieved, can create conditions for a country's renewal, reconstruction, and hope. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the third edition of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) initiative, he highlighted that Angolans are a people who endured colonial rule and civil war, yet today can "take pride in saying they belong to a nation of peace-one single nation."

According to Angola Press News Agency, Moratinos emphasized that the country serves as a testament to the necessity of preserving and nurturing peace daily. He remarked that Angola's lessons of reconciliation and hope underscore that humanity suffers in the absence of peace and progresses when peace prevails. The diplomat noted the significant progress Angola has made since the end of its conflict, attributing this to the determination of its people and leadership committed to a prosperous future.

Moratinos acknowledged Angola's influence in peace efforts beyond its borders, highlighting its respected role in dialogue, mediation, and regional recovery. He commended President Joo Louren§o's ongoing dialogue with the Democratic Republic of the Congo's leadership to stabilize the eastern region. He clarified that peace involves more than the absence of war; it encompasses reconciliation, inclusion, and a shared national purpose.

The diplomat further noted the importance of Africa's young population in driving development, culture, and opportunity on the continent. The initiative aims to emphasize the role of women, youth, and sports in conflict prevention and resolution and encourages a culture of dialogue over militarization.

Established in 2005, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations seeks to reduce tensions between cultural and religious communities, promote intercultural dialogue, and combat extremism. In 2022, the UNAOC launched an initiative dedicated to the African continent to enhance intercultural dialogue, promote peace, prevent extremism, and foster sustainable development. The initiative's first edition took place in Fez, Morocco, and the second in Praia, Cabo Verde.
